AIDS patients with low levels of vitamins A, beta-carotene, B6, and B12 have a poor prognosis, and supplements of these vitamins increase the survival rate [212]. Another study has shown that HIV-infected patients have a lower risk of developing actual AIDS if they maintain a high intake of vitamin E [1]. However, a high intake of zinc increases the death rate. |
| They concluded that these antioxidants cannot counter the intense activity of the multiplication of the hiv virus but may aggravate immune disturbances in HIV patients by the monocyte blockade. Moreover, in HIV patients low doses of antioxidants may have a paradoxical effect of increasing HIV multiplication. This is unwelcome news for the many AIDS patients who currently take large amounts of antioxidants such as NAC.
