Bowen's disease can also signal the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV), especially when it appears on the genitals. The classic sign of Bowen's disease is sore or weathered-looking skin. Compared with those of actinic keratosis, Bowen's disease patches tend to be crusty and larger (often over a half inch), redder, and scalier. stop sign

Cervical Cancer Vaccine 100% Effective For Most Types
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first vaccine that protects against the human papillomavirus (HPV), known to cause most cervical cancers. The vaccine, Merck & Co.'s Gardasil, was approved for girls and women ages nine to 26. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will now decide whether to include the vaccine in routine vaccination schedules. |
| A specific type of infectious pathogen, called the human papillomavirus (HPV), causes most cervical cancers. Cervarix is designed to protect against HPV 16 and HPV 18, which account for approximately 70% of cervical malignancies, Harper says.
THE STUDY
This study is a follow-up on some of the women who participated in a previous study that measured the effectiveness of the Cervarix vaccine.
Study author Dr. Diane M. Harper, a professor of community and family medicine and obstetrics and gynecology at Dartmouth Medical School, and her team tracked 776 of these women for up to 53 months. |

Men infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV)—one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in men and women—are at considerably higher risk of cancer of the penis than other men. Men who smoke, have HIV/AIDS, or have been treated for psoriasis with ultraviolet light and the drug psoralen are at increased risk of penile cancer, too.

The human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus that is spread by unprotected sexual intercourse, affects more than half of the world's population. HPV can cause genital warts and in rare cases cervical cancer. Of those who are infected, however, 95% are asymptomatic and never know they have HPV. Although almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV, HPV is ubiquitous and it is uncommon for HPV to progress to cervical cancer. Cervical cancer kills four thousand women per year, only one tenth the death rate of breast cancer, for example. That means that about 0. |

Natural medicine perspectives on cervical dysplasia are consistent with conventional medicine's understanding that the human papillomavirus causes virtually all cases and that this virus is sexually transmitted. Many cofactors serve as cocar-cinogens in the development of cervical dysplasia, including smoking, nutrient deficiencies, immune deficiency, and possibly oral contraceptives. Where natural medicine diverges in its approach is in advising patients what they can do about these cofactors. |
| The human papillomavirus (HPV) causes virtually all cases of cervical dysplasia, although most women exposed to HPV actually never get dysplasia.
• Cervical dysplasia is classified as either low-grade or high-grade and, if left untreated or if the body is not able to reverse it on its own, can progress to cervical cancer, especially if a person is infected with the oncogenic strains of HPV.
• Cervical cancer of squamous cells is a preventable disease.
• Pap smears are screening tests, not diagnostic tests. |
| However, it is important to remember that the cause of cervical cancer is the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus.
PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS
The association between psychosocial factors and cervical dysplasia has been the subject of several investigations. Significant life stressors were found to be correlated, including low coping style, pessimism, a high degree of social alienation, high anxiety states, and feeling threatened. |
| Cervical cancer and dysplasia, genital warts, and condyloma are caused by the human papillomavirus, which is sexually transmitted. Virtually 100 percent of cervical dysplasias and cervical cancer is caused by HPV. This association is reflected in a simple rating system, in use since
1988, of low- and high-grade (precancerous) lesions or, more specifically, low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) and high-grade SIL, also referred to as LSIL and HSIL, respectively. |
| In the new terminology, low-grade SIL replaces the former terms mild dysplasia and CIN 1 (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia) and includes changes of simple infection with the human papillomavirus. High-grade SIL includes moderate and severe dysplasia, formerly classified as CIN 2 and CIN 3. Both the newer and traditional terms are used in this chapter and in the medical literature.

Folic acid superior to vaccine
While the vaccine for human papillomavirus is promising, there is evidence that folic acid supplementation may be superior since it protects against all strains of the virus.
Every year, between 250,000 and 1 million women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical dysplasia (a precancerous condition). While it can occur at any age, the peak incidence is in women between the ages of 25 and 35. It can take 10 years or longer for cervical dysplasia to develop into cancer. |

If you already have HPV, as millions of people do, you are out of luck. What about a real cure for a major disease like cancer or even a minor one like the common cold? Questions have recently emerged in the United States and Australia about the effectiveness and possibly dangerous side effects of Gardasil, Merck's newly licensed vaccine for human papillomavirus (HPV). This vaccine is given to young girls to prevent cervical cancer, which kills about 3,700 women each year. On June 9, 2007, The British Medical Journal reported that three deaths occurred in the U.S. shortly after immunization with the vaccine; these were among 1,637 adverse reactions reported by Judicial Watch, a public interest watchdog. |

The risk of cervical cancer doubles after ten years of oral-contraceptive therapy in women with a history of human papillomavirus infection (HPV). It is not clear if the risk is from the OCP or the increased risk of being infected with HPV for women on OCPs who may not use barrier protection. However, since the risk of getting cervical cancer is 0.008%, in any given year a doubling of risk means increasing your risk by another 0.008% per year. OCPs increase the risk of liver cancer, but this risk is rare. OCPs increase the risk of breast cancer by 10% to 20%. |
| The most common viral diseases are herpes simplex, herpes zoster (shingles), Cytomegalovirus, human papillomavirus (HPV), respiratory syncytial virus (colds), and influenza (flu).
The belief that vaccinations, like flu shots, have eliminated death from infectious disease in the twentieth century is widespread. In fact, much of the reduction in death from infectious disease is due to public-health measures, including improved nutrition and sanitation. And vaccinations are not without potential danger. We still don't know the potential long-term effects of vaccination. |

Infection with human papillomavirus, the cause of genital warts, is now known to be the major cause of cervical cancer. Epstein-Barr virus, in addition to being a culprit in lupus and multiple sclerosis, is now fingered in certain cancers such as Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Hepatitis B is thought to be associated with an increased risk of some liver cancers. Even some psychiatric conditions, such as schizophrenia and certain types of obsessive-compulsive disorder, are believed to be directly or indirectly the result of infections. |

Four out of five women will contract the human papillomavirus during their lifetime, but only about 7% of infected women will develop cervical cancer. So there are other factors involved. It is estimated that Epstein-Barr, a herpes family virus that infects 90% of the world's population, is associated with lymphoma. But obviously this virus is only the first step in the development of cancer. |

The first is poor diet and nutrition that leads to an unbalanced and cancer-promoting environment on the cellular level (see the section "cancers" for more details), and the second is by one of the strains of a common sexually transmitted virus, called the human papillomavirus (HPV).
However, contrary to popular medical mythology, it is not merely the presence of HPV that causes cervical cancer: It's actually the weakness of the human immune system and a lack of friendly bacteria that allow HPV to take hold and cause cancer. |

Recently, attention has focused on the role of the human papillomavirus (HPV) as the major cause of cervical dysplasia. The risk factors for becoming infected with HPV and developing cervical dysplasia include early age at first intercourse; multiple sexual partners; herpes simplex type 2; smoking; oral contraceptive pill use; and many nutritional factors, such as deficiency of vitamin A and folic acid. |

Pap smears, it is common sense that most people's bodies have the ability to prevent the virus from causing an actual diseased state. Specifically, their immune systems are doing a better job at keeping them healthy. This is true for women both systemically and in the vagina. There is local immune tissue in the cervical epithelium, and the immune status of this tissue is in part responsible for resistance to the virus.
This is the background logic for both systemic immune support and local immune support. |

Preliminary studies suggest that, in order to cut the risk of cancer in half, the average person would need to eat about two pounds of broccoli or similar vegetables per week. Because the concentration of sulforaphane is much higher in broccoli sprouts than in mature broccoli, the same reduction in risk theoretically might be had with a weekly intake of just a little over an ounce of sprouts. |

Mimicry molecules have been found in viral proteins (including the Epstein-Barr virus and human papillomavirus) and appear to exist in some gluten-rich products and milk. The leaky gut syndrome (permeable intestinal lining) may also be an important factor in allowing antigens to pass into the system and activate the immune system (Toohey et al. 2002).
Normally, a healthy intestinal lining will prevent the passage of large molecules and antigens into circulation. A leaky gut can result in food allergens being absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, initiating an immunological reaction. |
