Home Remedies
In Asia, the roots are often used for coughs, phlegm, and sore throats. It is believed that crushing a baked, blackened eggplant and applying it to teeth and gums will promote a healthy mouth. This concoction is also said to stop bleeding gums and nosebleeds. Eggplant has been used as an antidote for poisonous mushrooms, to reduce hemorrhoids, soothe burns, and relieve cold sores.

Zinc possesses antiviral activity and will attack viruses that may cause the common cold. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported a recent study demonstrating that after one year of either zinc supplementation or no supplementation, those taking zinc experienced far fewer colds than those who took a placebo. In addition, 88 percent of participants in a study of the elderly developed colds when they didn't take 45 mg of zinc regularly. Note that these participants ranged in age from 55 to 87— could there be a need for higher levels of zinc as we age? |

Researchers in Japan agree that tea, and EGCG in particular, achieves antiviral effects by interfering with the ability of viruses to adhere to cells.16
The influenza virus is also rendered inactive by green tea's polyphenols. Researchers at the National Institute of Health, Tokyo, Japan, discovered that EGCG binds with the flu virus, thereby preventing it from causing an infection. This is a very promising discovery, since influenza causes many deaths throughout the world. A study of mice demonstrated the anti-influenza action of polyphenols in animals. |
| Perhaps the most exciting research about green tea and viruses has to do with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS. Despite occasional progress and breakthroughs, AIDS researchers remain frustrated in their search for a way to prevent infection with HIV. EGCG has been reported to inhibit the action of an enzyme called reverse transcriptase (RT), which is essential for the reproduction of HIV. This is the same enzyme that the well-known drug AZT inhibits. |

A painless, hard lymph node or jawbone can be an early warning sig
SIGNIFICANT FACT
Lymph nodes (aka lymph glands) are small, bean-shaped infection fighters that keep the body healthy by filtering out or trapping bacteria, viruses, cancer cells, and other toxic substances. About one-third of the 500 to 600 lymph nodes in the body are on the sides of the neck and on the throat. Others are found in the groin, chest, abdomen, and armpits. |

STOP SIGN
If you hear that ear candling—medically called ear coning—is a good HPTy way to remove earwax, listen up. Several recent studies have snuffed out ^HF' this theory. They've shown that ear candling, which involves placing a hollow, wax-coated tube in the ear and lighting the far end, can not only damage your inner ear but burn your ear and face as well. |

Nonallergic asthma is triggered by factors not related to allergens, such as upper respiratory infections, anxiety, stress, exercise, cold or dry air, hyperventilation, smoke, viruses, medications [aspirin, NSAIDs (see Chapter 2), beta-blockers, and ACE inhibitors (see Chapter 5)], sulfites found in red wine, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Like allergic asthma, nonallergic asthma is characterized by airway obstruction and inflammation that can also be treated and partially reversed with medications similar to those used for allergic asthma. |

The organism's field—its information template—may be all that is necessary for the spread of viruses and other infectious microbes or for the appearance of symptoms associated with the real microbe. However, to be susceptible to that field, your body-field has to be compromised in some way. There has to be an environment—an Energetic Terrain—in which that information has meaning and, consequently, can affect the physical body. |

If their immune systems prevent viruses and bacteria taking hold in the body, the chances are that their asthma will improve. Secondly, the immune system plays a part in the inflammatory reaction in asthma (see page 24) and a healthy immune system may not be so ready to over-react to asthma triggers.
Nutrients and vitamins stimulate the body's immune system while deficiencies adversely affect the body in various ways. It is well known that a Vitamin C deficiency results in the body being more susceptible to respiratory illnesses such as colds. |
| It is not clear, however, whether the drop in asthma symptoms was due to a drop in respiratory viruses as a result of taking the vitamin (colds are frequently a trigger for asthma) or whether the Vitamin C was preventing asthma by dampening the allergic or inflammatory response.
Another study was conducted by Dr Schachter at Yale University, in the United States, focusing on the ability of Vitamin C to relieve exercise-induced asthma. |
| Harmful bacteria and viruses can be found in or on almost everything we eat, drink, breathe or touch. Our immune system, which consists of special cells within the body, recognises and fights these marauding invaders. Without the immune system our bodies would not cope with such constant attacks and people would die from simple ailments like the common cold. A healthy immune system is our greatest ally and good nutrition our best ammunition.
How does a healthy immune system improve asthma? In two ways. |
| Additionally, some respiratory bacteria and viruses can be neutralised by various antibodies in the lining of the airways and cells of the alveoli called macrophages, to safeguard the quality of oxygen entering the airways.
Breathing Patterns
If we don't breathe correctly we invite ill-health. Most people assume that the way they breathe is how everybody breathes ?that it happens naturally, so what is there to think about? Well, there is much to think about!
Do you know how your breathing pattern affects your health? |
| Allergic Triggers
Allergic triggers are often very small particles: small enough to be mistaken by the body for viruses or bacteria (which are not as large as human cells).
DUST MITES
The most common allergic trigger is dust mite populations. The mite is too tiny to be seen, but it is still too large for the human body to have an allergic reaction to it. Its droppings, however, are light enough to float into the air and be inhaled, and it is these that set off the allergic reaction. It is estimated that up to 75 per cent of all asthmatics may be allergic to the dust mite. |
| However, in allergic people the bloodstream has programmed white cells to attack surfaces of particles that are not viruses or bacteria, and may be substances with which we come into contact all the time.
The body doesn't have to meet the substances just in the blood: cells known as mast cells that lie in the surface of the lung passages and airsacs, and through the digestive system, are 'scouts' for the army of white blood cells. If the allergen meets a mast cell a signal is sent to call reinforcements, and inflammation results. |

Microbiology tecognizes categories of microorganisms, such as amoebas, fungi, yeasts, bacteria, and viruses, and in his testing Peter found that the Energetic Terrains matched to entire categories of microorganisms, rather than to specific, individual organisms. So the Terrain Infoceuticals cover these broad categories, and NES cannot be used diagnostically to identify a specific microbe.
In its Energetic Terrain theory, NES is dealing with the bioenergetic signature of a pathogen, not the physical pathogen. |

Antimicrobial botanicals: Some herbal medicines act to kill the bacteria or viruses responsible for food poisoning. For example, licorice root, purple coneflower root, and osha root may all fight food poisoning stemming from infections. Tinctures of these roots can be taken several times a day during the acute phase of food poisoning.
Berberine: This alkaloid has been studied for its ability to combat gastrointestinal infections, and could also be useful for food poisoning. |

It increases the body's production of white blood cells, which the body uses to defend against infection and impede the growth of viruses and bacteria. Bioflavonoids enhance the effectiveness of vitamin C as well as improve the body's absorption of this vitamin. Take 500-1,000 mg three times daily. Also take 400 IU of vitamin E with mixed tocopherols daily as it is a powerful antioxidant that helps destroy free radicals, which inhibit healing. By protecting the cells, vitamin E promotes immune system efficiency. Colloidal silver is another potent natural antibiotic. |

Increased levels of melatonin associated with deep sleep promote immune system activity, protect you from viruses, and have remarkable anticancer properties. Deep sleep also increases human growth hormone naturally, so the levels oscillate as they are supposed to, and you start to feel like a puppy. Growth hormone also plays a critical role in fostering optimal body weight.
As we mentioned, sleep problems that develop with age can be attributed to a decrease in REM caused by frequent awakenings. Why does that happen? |
